I have to admit that as an immigrant I do not have peace–yet. I wrote this in an effort to arrive at a place where I am more available to those around me. I hope that actively showing love and attention to those that cross my path can help me heal and hopefully those around me as well.

That, to me, took courage. My thoughts are similar in a lot of ways. I have peace after the election. Not because I am in sync with our next president. But because I personally trust that someone bigger than me and my finite mind is working things out. And I have no need to live in a state of panic when there are wonderful people that cross my path everyday that deserve my love and attention. That is where I want to put my energy. And God will take care of the rest that is out of my reach.

And thank you Shayne for being a blessing in my life. I still remember 1.5 years ago praying to God for a house church where I could spend my Saturday mornings. A place that felt warm, safe, and sacred. Only a week later, I found myself in your livingroom among a group of people who were searching for the same experience. Thank you for opening your home to us and supporting me in my journey toward accepting God’s grace and love. And thank you Outlook for sharing Shayne’s story.

It’s possible though, for some, it might be too soon for us to embrace the other. Personally, I need a period of solitude & reflection — to heal. This election represented much more than a political contest. A rich, white man who has maligned, bullied & denigrated all he defines as other has had his behavior validated by our democratic system. A man who boasted about sexually assaulting women has been elevated to, what some refer to as, the exalted position of leader of the free world. Those who have experienced sexual assault and gender violence have learned once again that sexual aggression|violence is minimized, ignored, and, as in this case, seemingly rewarded in our society. Over 59 million Americans told me – us – that these crimes do not matter when the perpetrator is white, male, rich, etc.
This election is more than a political contest where we have to be gracious losers. 59 + of my fellow Americans put a historic stamp of approval on actions of theft, dishonesty, violence, & aggression in general – as long as those actions are committed by those in power. I am deeply disturbed and sickened, not by the fact that a sociopath has been elected president of the U.S., but by the message conveyed to me by the 59 million citizens who validate and celebrate his attitudes & behaviors.
As one who is familiar with your posts on this blog, I know that your call to love the other comes from a thoughtful, empathic space. I hope I can find that space as well at some point. But for me it is too soon. I need to find a way to understand & explain the behavior of that mass of 59 million. This could take some time. Thank you for your open & generous heart.

Would it be okay to use it with our “Mask” series that we will be doing in October for our youth? Thank you so much!
